Rose Hoare tries to make sense of handbag hysteria. (The name of this author so suits her because seriously this piece sucked big time! I mean what the hell..she was comparing handbags and purses to CRACK? How twisted and stupid is she? UGH the sheer blasphemy is making me so hate it!!!! I So HATED READING THIS ARTICLE! What a bummer and a hater this girl is! I am beyond sorry for her. Why must she criticize the one thing keeping girls somewhat sane these days? MEN HAVE CARS, PORN AND SPORTS TO OBSESS ABOUT... WHY ARE WOMEN BEING CRITICIZED FOR HAVING BAGS, SHOES and CLOTHES? Haaay. Stupid!

Bags: NOT A healthy obsession?

Women are obsessed with handbags, apparently. Just so totally obsessed. Women are Glenn Close and handbags are Michael Douglas*. It used to be shoes, now it's handbags that are catnip to women. If she could, a woman would dig a big pit, fill it with designer handbags and then roll around in the pile in ecstasy.

If a woman is having a crappy day and she passes a shop window and sees a nice handbag, her face lights up and all her previous thoughts just fly right out of her head. She goes inside and buys the bag, and when she comes out of the store, she somehow feels taller because she knows that she is the kind of woman who has a designer bag. And so she struts along the street, smiling to herself over her newfound sense of power and purpose, because who needs a genuine, justified reason to feel good about themselves when they can have a new handbag?

Yes, women like shoes and handbags. But no, we don't all think they're of vital, world-defining importance. To me, shoes and handbags are like socks and oven-roast bags ? they're nice enough, they have their place in the world, I'd rather not have to go without them, but I don't want to talk about them all day and I resent the suggestion that they hold some sort of power over me.

And even if they did hold power over me, I wouldn't care to have that acknowledged, let alone encouraged and celebrated. People who take crack are also deeply enamoured of the stuff and it also temporarily makes them feel good, but that doesn't mean crack is somehow empowering.

I admit that a beautiful handbag, like anything well-designed, is a satisfying thing. I am not without aesthetic awareness. In fact, browsing handbag blogs, I saw a bag so ugly I was temporarily put off my lunch. (It was a sickly speckled green and looked like a colostomy bag about to burst and it cost US$635, a fact that still makes me laugh lugubriously.)

But reading the breathless, fervent discussions taking place on handbag blogs, I kept feeling like I was nine again. And not in a good way. Pop-ups kept asking me to help save pandas from extinction and offering me screensavers of ponies. "Whatever your opinion is on sequins, you have to admit they're in again," contended Purseblog.com. "I've hated them as much as anyone else, but boy do they sparkle."

In disputations over the merits of handbags, bag fanciers often pay attention to what Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff and Ashlee Simpson are carrying. Or "wearing". These women are all in their early 20s, with careers as teen movie actresses and pop singers. Remind me why I should care what bag they carry?

In February, Mary-Kate Olsen, star of Full House, New York Minute and the video game Mary-Kate and Ashley's Magical Mystery Mall, wrote a piece for The New York Times about a red, quilted Chanel bag she loves, and also has in blue and white, although the red one, we learn in the second paragraph, is definitely her favourite. We also learn that when Mary-Kate finds a bag she likes, she wears it to death until she becomes obsessed with another bag, and that this process is repeated "three to five times a year". This is in The New York Times, mind. I can't italicise that enough.

The notion that handbag mania is a quirky and adorable personality trait, or that it's a malaise common to all women, has gone far enough. There are better things to obsess over, better things to spend thousands of dollars on and far better things to make you feel good about yourself. A handbag won't keep you safe from harm, it won't hold you close at night, and it will never love you back.

If I were a socialite, I would snap up every last dress from Vera Wang's new Lavender label and wear them day and night. In fact, I might pull a Lindsay Lohan and switch ensembles mid-day, just to keep my adoring fans on their toes.

I would wear the short frocks for day with colorful jeweled flats and too many bracelets. Obviously I would be overdressed for any daytime occasion, but isn't that the beauty of being a socialite?
Then for night, I would wear the floor-sweeping evening gowns with pointy skimmers and big diamond button earrings - even if my plans consisted of One Tree Hill followed by Grey's Anatomy. Even a socialite has to have guilty TV pleasures!

The Met's Costume Institute gala truly is the equivalent of the fashion industry's Oscars... at least in terms of red carpet appearances. Starlets begin planning their entricate ensembles months in advance, going to great lengths to secure the it gown by the it designer.

I Like To Gossip As Much As The Next Girl...

A few years back, I spent the entire summer reading Gossip Girl books. It is amazing how quickly I slipped out of my unadventurous small city life, instead getting caught up in the ficticious Upper East Side drama. If you're unfamiliar with the series, let's fix that. Imagine the teenage drama of The O.C. fused with the fabulous martini-sipping, designer-driven New York nature of Sex and the City... with a sprinkle of Socialite Rank.

Written by Cecily von Ziegesar (an appropriate name for such books!), Gossip Girls is engaging in the same way a reality show like Top Model or The Hills is. Such a departure from our everyday lives that we just can't put the book down (or turn the TV off).

If you haven't read these books of scandalous goodness yet, now is the time. Whether you're 12 or 25, these nine books are perfect pool-side reads.

I have high expectations for the TV version. The more I learn about it, the more excited I get...

Sometimes I wish Karl Lagerfeld is my family's wacky uncle/tito as we Filipinos call it. Can you even imagine the stories you would have if he was part of your family? He would certainly be a fun addition at the dinner table... except he would probably only eat, well, diet coke. That would just add to the glamour.

Once again, Uncle Karl is full of wacky antics. He kicked off the show for his resort collection with this disclaimer - "Live from Paris, Chanel Line No.5. Please be careful when opening the overhead compartments. Some quilted bags may fall." - followed by models pouring out of two "Chanel Line Challenger 601 jets." Now that is luxury.

With a flawless hi-lo mix of white jeans, red carpet dresses, colorful short shorts, and short party frocks, the setting definitely didn't outshine the collection.

Paris in Jail

Celebutante PARIS HILTON turned herself into L.A.'s Twin Towers Jail at about 11:40 p.m. Sunday night. According to the L.A. County Sheriff's department, she was then brought to Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, CA, in an unmarked police car, where she began serving her sentence for violation of probation.

On Monday, Hilton's lawyer spoke outside the L.A. County jail where she is being held, saying that she "is doing very well under the circumstances," and that the staff members reported her as being "gracious, polite and thankful." He also said that she turned herself in early because she "did not want to make a media circus out of this event but rather [wanted to] surrender quietly."

ET obtained Hilton's official booking sheet, which lists her at five feet eight inches and a slender 115 pounds. So far, she is not sharing her 12-foot by 8-foot cell, which is furnished with a metal toilet with no seat and a thin mattress on a hard bed. She will take meals in her cell and spend at least one hour a day for showering, watching TV in a community room or exercising. Her first meal behind bars on Monday was cereal, juice and bread.

Just a few hours before she reported in -- Paris shared her feelings about jail time in a revealing interview with ET.

We caught up with the heiress at the MTV Movie Awards, where she told our KEVIN FRAZIER, "I'm obviously scared, but I am ready to face my sentence."

She also revealed that she chose to go to an L.A. County Jail, rather than a "pay jail" that might have had more perks.

"I did have an option to go to a pay jail," she told Kevin, "but I chose to decline because I feel that the media portrays me in a way that I'm not and I wanted to show everyone that I can be just like everybody else. And I'm gonna do the time the right way, and I hope this will be a good example to people."

Paris also says that negative comments do hurt her, but added, "Hopefully this will show people that, you know, I am a strong and good person."

How will she pass the time in prison?

"By going in there I am going to have to be alone ... for the first time in my life. I'm gonna do a lot of reading and ... just grow as a person and come out of there better than ever."

In the end, she told ET that she's at peace with her plight: "Even though it's scary and I'm sad, I feel like everything happens for a reason, and God made this happen for a reason."

The "Simple Life" star was all smiles as she attended two other Hollywood events last week with her sister, NICKY. Saturday evening, she and Nicky were with their mom KATHY HILTON as she celebrated the 30th class reunion of University High School, coordinated by The Reunion Committee, Inc.

In jail, the pampered heiress is making some serious sacrifices to her new lifestyle. Paris had to give up her clothes and jewelry for a standard-issue jumpsuit -- and she was given the same toiletry kit that all the inmates receive.

The 26-year-old star will be allowed to wear make-up in prison, but it has to be purchased from the jail's commissary on a pre-paid account.

Paris had until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday to begin her jail sentence, which concerns a probation violation for driving on a suspended license. The star has said that she is "ready to face the consequences" for her actions.

"No one is above the law," she said. "I surely am not. I do not expect to be treated better than anyone else who violated probation. However, my hope is that I will not be treated worse."

I have never really touched on the "skinny starlet" debacle because, quite frankly, I'm too busy studying celebrities' outfits to zoom in on their ever-shrinking (or, in some case, expanding) figures. I don't feel like waxing poetic about how Mary Kate is disappearing before our eyes; I've been too fixated about how she's been showing up on the red carpet dressed better than ever.

I have theory about these lithe fashion icons like Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth, Kiera Knightley, Mischa Barton, et cetera. Could it be that, rather than competing to be the "thinnest of them all," the girls just want to be able to fit into sample sizes - so they can be the most stylish of them all? If their bodies stay model-thin, they can borrow dresses right off the runway. In fact, they can debut their favorite designers' dress samples before anyone else lies eyes on them.

Exhibit A: Kate Bosworth started out as an athletic girl who favored incredibly nondescript dresses for the red carpet. She got thin (okay, arguably a little too thin) and her style took a complete 180. Chloe, Lanvin, Marni, Marc, Proenza Schouler... the now she's every fashion designer's sweetheart, always perched in the front row during fashion week.

Exhibit B: Rihanna came across as a nice little mix of Fergie and Beyonce: lots of jumpsuits, platforms, and denim ~~bootyshorts~~ boyshorts. In the past few months, she's traded bootylicious for glamorous. Zac Posen, Gucci, Matthew Williamson, oh my!

Exhibit C: Nicole Richie went from that to this. Enough said. My take on Ms. Richie: she got stressed out after rehab, the weight fell off, and then realized she could wear pristine vintage YSL and Alaia. When you have a closet filled with Rachel Zoe-selected size-zero designer duds, it would be tough to find motivation to put on a little healthy weight.

I am truly fascinated with fashion. I feel like I'm reading a fairytale when I look at the fashion layouts in Vogue. If a designer approached me and said, "I have this dress sample that I just whipped up and I want you to wear it next month at {insert fantastic red carpet event here}," I would cut back on ice cream without a second thought.

Ive been wanting to act and model since I was a little kid. I want to be an actress. I know Ill never be a model because I am too small for my age (hey, i am only 5") but im still hoping.My cousins and I used to imitate those people we see on tv and I used to play dress ups.Last night, I read an article (Teen Vogue) about people who want to be famous. Jeniffer Hudson, for instance.She was eliminated in American Idol but that didnt stop her from doing what she wants. Now, she's an academy award winning actress and she's the cover of Vogue(I forgot what issue). Acting has been my passion since I dont know when. Acting is my only talent. I know I want to be an actress. I want to live a glamorous life . Ive never been on the spotlight. (except 2nd year) but whatever. Acting will always remain as my passion. "Someday, I'll be BIG" Who knows, someday, I'll be an Oscar Winner. ;) and a supermodel. Or maybe I'll be a Tony award winning actress(though I am not gifted with a good singing voice) Haha :))

So yeah, after that, Julie and I went to Gateway,window shopped and then went to Starbucks. I bought Caramel Frappuccino ( I should not have bought one. Haha :))) Yeah, so we(Julie,Me,T-ann,CJ) talked about stuff and our "future".Then ate lunch at Shakey's and window shopped too. haha :)) twas super fun hanging out with them. Ill miss this.

Friday: twas the last day of our MSA review classes. :(First, we had our dry run and whoa. It was really hard. Especially Math. Since I didnt eat breakfast,it was hard answering the questions while your/my stomach is empty. Then came lunch, first we(me,dessa,karen,kate,keiko,truds) went to Mcdo, but there were alot of people there so we went to shakeys instead. Went back to MSA and yeah, we were late, so we had a different classroom and i didnt see him. Our classroom was like a detention class because the room is super small and super cold. Super FUN. I met new friends!! haha :)) took a lot of pictures. After that,went to Eastwood with Karen,Dessa,Truds. I had fun!!

Im so stupid. I let him go. I missed the opportunity. Now I wont see him again na. :(

my summer is oh so boring. I want to go to LA. I miss LA. I miss Beverly Hills. I could live there. Hahaha.

I didnt go to Puerto Galera because I was sick. Boo hoo. Stayed in my room and watched tv

... BUMMING( watch TV, ate snacks, breakfast,lunch,dinner, took a bath,slept)

Thursday
My mom and I went to the mall and went to the salon. Haha. My hair is really short like Sarah's (ANTM cycle 6) hair

went to Rockwell and splurged on clothes and bags. spent 12,000 bucks (sa clothes ko lang). haha. But im not going to wear these clothes this summer(i mean kapag nagreview classes). Haha. After that, went to Sta Lu and I saw

bum. bum. bum. Mom and I fought because she thought that I stole her oh so expensive Cartier bangles and I swear I didnt steal those bangles.Kasi nawala eh.

Sunday
Went to Tita Emma's house. Tita Chenet was there too so we bought cheap accessories from her and spent 4k. Haha

Monday(Today)
I found myself reading books. Geom book. Haha. Im really really bored. Watched OTH,ANTM and FashionTv. Gina got/was eliminated and Jade is sooooo mean. Haha

Fashion Week

Dessa and I went to Philippine Fashion Week yesterday at Glorietta. We arrived there at around 5.30 and a lot of people were there. I saw a couple of celebrities. The designers were great!! I love their designs. We weren't able to finish the fashion show because we/they got bored so we went window shopping and had our (Dessa and I) pictures taken. Then had dinner at Mcdonalds and went to Starbucks afterwards. Then slept/ sleepover at Dessa's. Had fun there too. Watched One Tree Hill and Dessa made a layout but she didnt use it. haha

A Movie Script Ending

Last night was a blast. Haha.

I arrived at Makati ShangRi-La at around 4.30 pm. I was so early, I was waiting at the lobby for 10 minutes, so i texted Trish and asked her kung ano room number nila. I went there, room 630. I love their room[Which btw cost about 16k] haha. I also saw Golda and Diane there. I had my hair and make-up done at Xperts salon.

After that, went to the lobby and I saw Julie and her date, L.A.[he's gay but he is HOT] He's nice. I also saw Maui and her date, Dwayne[her cousin] he is HOT too. haha. Then I saw Abbie and Jema, we hanged out at the lobby. Abbie and T-ann went to Rizal Ballroom as Jema and I were waiting for our dates. Finally, I saw him. At first I didnt approach him since Im not sure if he's that guy. Haha. nilagay niya corsage ko. I didnt buy a boutonniere . After that, went to Rizal Ballroom and had our pictures taken. My date is so funny. But he's too busy hanging out with his gay friends{boy hunting}. Lots of things happened. twas really fun. After the prom, we [except for Bryan and Meynard] went to Starbucks. haha. Maui was a little tipsy. It was fun hanging out with them. Haha. I like Dwayne, cutie Hehe :)) Im so excited for next year: Gradball. I know who am I going to ask na!! hehe

Banaag Farewell at Pergola,Ayala Heights

Banaag Farewell party was fun. We went to Cheskie's house to prepare for the party. Then went to Pergola. Watched the video that we made for the seniors. I didnt swim. But I drnk!![Beer] haha. Ill miss the seniors. :( I'll miss the Green Queens.

We went to Kamae's house to get the jewelry that I'll wear for the prom. After that ,we went to Issa's BIG house to get my videocam. Then we went to SM north to buy my shoes,clutch and accessories. I bought a pair of gold shoes, a bronze clutch, a pair of earrings and a necklace. I didnt buy the Sally Hansen airbrush. :(

K. Im so bored. and lazy too. I have to wake up early tomorrow because I'll go/have to go to the dentist tom. waah.
